Manchester United rode their luck at times against Wolfsburg but a Michael Owen hat-trick eventually saw off the German champions 3-1.
United began the game with Patrice Evra, captain for the night, as their only recognised defender as Park Ji-Sung slotted in at right-back and Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher partnered each other in central defence.
Wolfsburg knew a win would seal their place in the knockout stages while a point for United would secure them top spot in the group.

Manchester United kept the pressure on at the top of the table with an emphatic 4-0 victory away to West Ham.
An uninspiring contest exploded into life on the stroke of half-time when Paul Scholes crashed a powerful volley past Robert Green from the edge of the area, and United then produced a superb second-half performance.
Darron Gibson then put the Red Devils in total control with a magnificent goal just after the hour mark and there was no way back for the Hammers in the closing stages.

Manchester United remain on course to defend their Carling Cup crown after seeing off Tottenham 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
The Red Devils found themselves on the back foot for long periods at Old Trafford on Tuesday, but moved safely into the last four courtesy of a first-half brace from Darron Gibson.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp would have been pleased with the bright start made by his side, but they were unable to breach a United defence marshalled expertly by Nemanja Vidic.
With the visitors failing to make their pressure count, United were able to take full advantage as they countered with intent.
They broke the deadlock after 16 minutes, with Gibson drilling low into the bottom corner after latching onto a clever pass from Anderson.

Wayne Rooney helped himself to a hat-trick as Avram Grant's first match as Portsmouth manager ended in a 4-1 defeat to Manchester United.
Grant's last match as Chelsea boss saw the Blues beaten on penalties by the Red Devils in the 2008 UEFA Champions League final, and he was left to rue events from 12 yards once again at Fratton Park.
Rooney struck twice from the spot either side of the interval after first being brought down by Michael Brown and then converting following Frederic Piquionne's ridiculous challenge on Ryan Giggs.

Manchester United suffered a shock 1-0 reverse to Besiktas at Old Trafford to still require a point to finish top of UEFA Champions League Group B.
Rodrigo Tello netted against the run of play in the 20th minute to give the Turks a famous victory over Sir Alex Ferguson's much-changed side.
Nemanja Vidic had a great chance to put United ahead in the 13th minute but could not direct his header on target from Anderson's corner.
